What is a Choice Navigator?
"Choice Navigator" is defined on line 1001-1010 in the HB1 Enacted doc (available under our Helpful Docs page) as an individual who: provides consultations, at a mutually agreed upon location, on the selection of, application for, and enrollment in educational options addressing the academic needs of a student; curriculum selection; and advice on career and postsecondary education opportunities.
Choice Navigators must also meet certain requirements to qualify as an approved Choice Navigator.
Am I required to use a Choice Navigator for PEP?
No. A "Choice Navigator" is optional for PEP students.
Will a Choice Navigator have authority to tell me what I can and can't do for my home education program?
No. It is also in the above statute that "nothing in this section authorizes a choice navigator to oversee or excercise control over the curriculum or academic programs of a personalized education program."
They are simply an optional resource some families may choose to use.
Will Choice Navigators have to meet in person with families?
Brenda does not believe that "in person" is specified in statute. They must arrange a place and time that is convenient for the parent... but that does not specify it has to be in person.
How does someone become a Choice Navigator?
A Choice Navigator simply has to meet the requirements listed in statute:
"A Choice Navigator holds a valid Florida teacher certification, adjunct teacher certification, a bachelor or graduate degree in the subject area where any instruction is given, demonstrated mastery of subject area knowledge, or is certified through an internationally recognized research-based training program approved by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE)."
However, according Step Up's PEP page under their Frequently Asked Questions, they will be compiling a list of approved Choice Navigators to help parents find one.
Their FAQ states that "Choice Navigators will sign up and be listed in EMA as service providers, like part-time tutors," so if your'e interested in being listed as one of their approved Choice Navigators, we suggest you complete the Provider application on Step Up's website.
(NOTE: If you'd like to reference those "Choice Navigator" FAQs from Step Up directly, they are available on their website here--just go to that page, then click on the hyperlinked "Fees for services provided by a Choice Navigator*" under the "How Does It Work" section, and a pop-up will appear with a list of specific FAQs about Choice Navigators.)
Hello, we've completed and submitted the application to become Choice Navigators and have yet to hear any reply. Any idea on the timeline and/or our next action step...beyond waiting it out.
