Hi. I'm reading through the new bill that passed and am trying to understand what this section means practically -
"A parent may not apply for multiple scholarships under
this section and s. 1002.395 for an individual student at the
same time." (pg 18) My student is currently awarded PEP but after research I realized that she should qualify for UA. So I am looking to apply to UA for next year when application open. However, I really don't want to lose her awarded PEP unless she is awarded UA. And my understanding is there is no gaurantee she will be awarded UA. But the above section of the new bill has me concerned that if I apply for UA I might be able to renew PEP. Is that an accurate understanding? To be clear I am not looking to recieve both schlorships. But i'd like to not lose the PEP schlorship until she is awarded UA. If she is not awarded UA i'd like to be able to renew PEP. Is that going to be possible? Or am I going to have to risk her losing PEP and run the chances of her also not being awarded UA?
You will be unable to apply for UA while still "in" PEP. You would need to decide which you want to apply for, and then if you do not get awarded UA, you could request that your application for UA be canceled, and then try applying for PEP... if you want. But then you're removing yourself from the UA waitlist. I suggest determining which scholarship is the most beneficial to your individual student and apply for that one -- since you're only able to apply for one at a time. If your child needs help with therapies, etc., then UA might be your best fit--but you'd need to register with the county as home education or enroll in a private school, since you'd no longer be in the PEP attendance track. If you don't need the additional support provided by UA, then perhaps it would be better to remain in PEP and complete the renewal application.
